Rope Access Ascenders Explained

Rope access is a popular method of work for professionals working on or above rooftops, steep mountain sides, and other places that are difficult to reach. However, this means climbing up steep slopes with tools and materials. Ascenders are one of the most important parts of the equipment necessary for rope access. They are used to help climbers ascend ropes without having to pull themselves up hand-over-hand. Learn more about different types of ascenders here!
Check the video to see how a rope access ascender works in the industry.
Introduction
A rope access ascender is a device that allows a person to ascend or descend on a fixed rope, without the need for any other equipment. The main feature is that it attaches to the rope and either through a camping motion or “teeth” it grabs the rope when you pull down. It slides up the rope freely.
Types of Ascenders
There are roughly two types. The ones that work with a camming motion and squeeze the rope, and ascenders with sharp little teeth that grab the rope. In the video above I talk about the latter.
How a Rope Access Ascender Works
A rope ascender is a mechanical device that you attach to the end of rope or cord, which allows you to climb up by pulling on it. A rope ascender has two main parts – an attachment point, usually at the top, and a rope grabbing part. Using a rope ascender is not difficult. You simply attach the rope to the chest ascender on the harness, place your hand ascender on the rope above that and place your foot in the footloop. Now stand up in the footloop and the rope should slide through the chest ascender. Sit back down and move the hand ascender further up the rope.

I have a question. Will chest croll(ascender )consider as complete connection point?
That depends on who and where you work for… I will give you my taken and what IRATA says. Basically the same.. Follow manufactures guidelines..
In short that means that when you are suspended and static, a croll or any other ascender is a full point. Than you look up whatever chest ascender you use and see what the manufacture says about moving up on the rope.
