Debunking Knot Myths: Figure of Eight vs. Figure of Nine – Untying the Controversy
Introduction:
For years, I’ve been asserting and demonstrating that a Figure of Eight knot is easier to untie than a Figure of Nine. Despite showcasing this online and even conducting polls, there are still claims to the contrary. In a recent poll, 32% insisted that the Figure of Nine would be easier to untie.

The Versatility of Figure of Eight
The Figure of Eight knot stands as one of the most versatile climbing knots for various reasons, always proving easier to untie than its Figure of Nine counterpart. Through numerous tests, I’ve consistently found that the Figure of Nine knot has never been easier to untie. Never!
Challenging Assumptions
If you genuinely believe the Figure of Nine is easier to untie, I challenge you to prove it. Conduct your test by tying both knots on each end of a rope, subjecting them to various tensions, bouncing around, and untie them multiple times. Make a video post or reach out to me via email at connect@theropeaccesschannel.com, or DM on Instagram/TikTok/Patreon/Facebook. I’m easily accessible.
I’m not interested in anecdotes like “I’ve used it for years, and my F9 always comes out” or “I learned from a seasoned Scottish rope tech with 30 years of experience.” These claims lack substantiation. If you think an F9 is easier to untie, provide proof. I’ve yet to receive evidence that contradicts what I’ve demonstrated. It seems much of this “knowledge” is based on passed-down beliefs without substantial backing.
Real-world Impact
For example, a fire station altered its procedures after watching my YouTube video titled “F8 VS F9 Which is easier to untie?” and performing tests.
Moreover, tying and dressing a Figure of Eight is simpler and more recognizable. These factors outweigh “untieability” or the marginal strength difference in a lab setting. In the field, with old and dirty ropes, we often consider a 50% reduction in the Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) for a knot and a Safety Factor (SF) of 10.
Strength is rarely the most critical factor when selecting a knot. I’ve been expressing and demonstrating these points for a considerable time, as shown in my previous video. If you haven’t seen it, take a look. I still have a piece of rope somewhere with a Figure of Nine in it.
With that said, I am open to being proven wrong.
