Hello guys, welcome back to The Rope Access Channel.
Last time I showed you various back up devices. That is a great piece of kit however, we can not get to a worksite with only a back up. For that we will need to know how to use a rope access descender. Which is exactly what we will get into today as we continue with the gear series and talk about the various descenders and what they should be able to do. Besides getting you down a rope in a controlled manner of course.
Rope access descender
Starting off the same as the last video….There are a LOT of different descenders out there. Descenders for rope access use need to be able to two basic things.
- they need to stop your descend when you let go of the handle
- allow you to descend in a controlled manner
Now some are suitable for a rescue or two person load and some are that only after you follow a certain procedure.
If you want to know more about different descenders like the ISC D4,Tazr LOV2 and 3, Skylotec Sirius and the Petzl RIG, let me know in the comments on Youtube and I will make a dedicated video.
Since we are filming this in the Netherlands and the most widely used backup device here is the Petzl I’d, we will focus on that one for now.
In my opinion it is one of the safest descender. It has an unique feature that not many descenders have. That unique feature is the safety cam that engages if you thread the rope in the wrong way.

How to use a rope access descender
First you need to know how the Petzl I’d works. Friction
There is always some sort of mechanism inside that squeezes the rope. Connected to the mechanism is a handle that when you pull it, it releases the cam on the rope and you slide down the rope controlled. In a Petzl I’d that looks like this.
And the best way to show you is just by video. Watch it here on and find the How to us a rope access descender video here
As I showed you in the beginning of the video there are a lot of different descenders. If you would like me to make a video on a specific one, leave a comment on which one and I will make a dedicated video on that one.
