As we have seen in the F9 vs F8 video, it is important how we tie a F8 knot. There are two right ways to tie a F8 (properly dressed etc) and one of those is a little bit easier to undo after loading.
In this video I wil show you how to tie the perfect F8 knot in one go without a need of much dressing before setting the knot.

  1. This was part of the set on making good F8’s and the problems with F9’s, but I do not see the other video in the blog, so commenting on this one.

I have seen books reference the F9 as being easier to untie than the F8, so I sat with a rope and did a little testing when I came onto two ideas together. One was your idea of a properly made F8 where the load line is the inner/furthest crossing of the bight side (leaving the outer/closest free to loosen.) The other was from where this guy uses a bit of tube webbing and friction to make his anchor. He ties a water knot, but the cross wraps behind the tree has enough friction so that the tied water knot is never pulled tight. (Source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0WUCXscYSk By 1:35 you see his relying on friction instead of the knot.) What if that idea is applied to a F9?

I am talking about an IMPROPERLY set F9. I do not suggest this for use. However, there are so many loops in the F9 that the friction of the rope on rope could leave it loose even after having a load. This is very dangerous because you are encouraging the knot to slip! But, it lets people untie their F9 more easily.

I tried this, and it made easy to untie F9s. Are people doing dangerous things just so they can get an easy to untie knot?

    • Yeah the website is running behind the YouTube releases. One day I’ll make the time to update it here as well.. Hence the very very late reply.

He is building a wrap 3 pull 2 anchor. You can do the same with rope and what ever knot you want. By the way usually under tension, during lifting that third wrap will pull tight against the tree.
      There are a few things:.
-Using an F9 as a bend and rethreading it is way worse to do than an F8.
-An improper dressed F8 is already similar or easier to untie than a F9 so why bother with this
-A F9 is harder to recognise and inspect. Especially when dressed improperly.
-In a wrap 3 pull 2 you could easily use a water knot as well
-And just for fun.. Wrap 5 pull 4 or any more wrap versions are possible

From my experience under short term light loads dressed or not, there is very little difference into what knot you use. When the loads get heavier, or the duration of loading longer. Or of a cyclical nature (multiple ascents per day for weeks on end) and F8 is easier to untie.

And it seems you are just looking for a way to use a F9. You say it yourself, “I do not suggest this for use.” So it is a moot point not? Just tie and dress your knots properly

Like I said in the video, I’ll work of a F9 any day. It is an okay knot. Just not for the things people always say. Especially that untying part.
