What is a Double Deviation

In the context of rope access, a deviation refers to a change in the direction of the rope. Deviations are often used in rope access systems to navigate obstacles, create redirects, or efficiently access different work locations. They are essential for ensuring that the rope follows a safe and effective path.

How to make a double deviation

There are various devices and techniques used to create deviations in rope access systems, and they are typically designed to minimize friction and maintain the strength and integrity of the rope. Some common methods for creating deviations include:

1. **Deviation Anchors:** Specialized anchor points can be used to redirect the rope. These anchors are designed to minimize rope abrasion and reduce friction.

2. **Redirect Pulleys:** Pulleys can be strategically placed to redirect the rope. These pulleys are designed to rotate and reduce friction, allowing the rope to pass through smoothly.

3. **Rigging Plates:** Rigging plates are flat metal plates with multiple attachment points. They can be used to create deviations by connecting the rope to different points on the plate.

4. **Rigging Wheels:** Similar to pulleys, rigging wheels are designed to smoothly redirect the rope. They are often used in complex rope access systems.

Why use a Double Deviation

Double deviations are employed to navigate around edges, corners, or other obstacles, ensuring that the rope maintains the necessary strength and load-bearing capacity. A double deviations is used by technicians to avoid a hazard. Therefore the deviation needs to be doubled up. Proper training and adherence to industry standards are crucial to safely implement deviations in rope access work. Always follow the guidelines provided by relevant rope access organizations and standards to ensure the safety of personnel involved in rope access activities.
