How to make a compound pulley system can be very simple.. Just put a simple on a simple pulley system.. See what I did there πŸ˜‰. In this video we get into the three most used compound pulley systems. Of course there are countless variations possible. I will also demonstrate why using a compound pulley system may not be what you need.

  1. Allright, the answers are…..
    A) It is a 3:1with a CD (blue rope) pulling on a 5:1 (black rope). And we learned that with a compound system, we simply identify the simple systems within the compound one and multiply. 3 x 5 = 15:1

    B) By adding a 3:1 in parallel, we do not change the MA. We can see that by looking at the speed of the load. It will remain the same to a single 3:1. Arguably we could make it heavier if we take friction into account….

    C) This is actual a MA to DISadvantage. A 1:2. We need to pull twice as hard. Our 1:1 CD is pulling on a 1:2. If we pull down 1 meter, the load will go up 2 meters. So we use this to get thing moving real fast quickly. Yes we need to put in twice the effort, and that pays itself off in cool looking stunts in movies for instance.
If you turn it upside down you can the 2:1 clearer maybe?
